Historical Note

The Diebold Group was incorporated by John Diebold in 1954 as John Diebold and Associates, a management consulting firm specializing in computers and automation. The company provided consulting services to dozens of large U.S. corporations representing a wide variety of industries, as well as government and other public entities.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains nearly one thousand client reports, prepared primarily for the Diebold Group's corporate clients. Reports prepared for government and other public clients are also included. The reports, which date from 1954-1990, assess whether and how companies can make use of computers, and sometimes include specific recommendations for computer purchases based on predictions for automation in a particular industry. They range from broad reviews of company operations to evaluations of specific company activities. Also included are reports analyzing different segments of the computer industry, prepared for clients interested in business opportunities in the industry.

Arrangement of the Collection

The reports are arranged alphabetically by client name. There are a small number of reports for which no client is named; these reports are arranged alphabetically by title at the top of the list.
