Historical Note

In January 1980, William C. Norris began planning for Control Data Corporation (CDC) executives to write histories of the major business segments of the company. After compiling a list of potential contributors, selected current and former CDC executives were requested to write narratives, with as much supporting documentation as possible, on specific business areas or topics in mid-1980. By late 1981, all the narratives had been completed.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of two groups of materials: Project Administration and Executive History Narratives. The bulk of the series is the Executive History Narratives, including narratives as well as supporting documentation. Project Administration includes numerous drafts of lists of potential narrative writers and correspondence about the project between William C. Norris and other executives, including thank you letters to the executives who wrote narratives.

The CDC Historical Archives assigned the alphabetic designator "A" to the first document in each executive's history. Although "A" is usually a narrative, a few of the executive histories consist of a compilation of documents transmitted by a cover letter of varying detail. In the instances where the executive history includes no narrative, "A" is a cover letter. The Historical Archives also assigned alphabetic designators "B" through "RRR" to each attachment to an executive's narrative as needed. This notation has been retained in brackets ([]) for the researcher's reference and is placed near the end of each document's description right before the box and folder location. The alphabetic designators are also used in the Project Administration series.

No attempt has been made to standardize the order of information in descriptions for the various attachments to executive history narratives. Content additions have been made to a few of the descriptions of attachments, but accuracy of formal names has not been exhaustively checked from the documents.
