MITRE

MITRE was founded in 1958 as a not-for-profit corporation to provide engineering and technical services to the federal government. MITRE's customers in the federal government include the Department of Defense, the FAA, the IRS, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. MITRE was initially formed to provide direction to the companies involved in the US Air Force SAGE project, with many of MITRE's first employees initially from MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, where SAGE was being developed. In the subsequent decades, MITRE worked on numerous government projects, including the FAA's automated air traffic control system, and precursors to the ARPANET.
