National Security Agency (NSA)

Successor to the Armed Forces Security Agency (AFSA), the National Security Agency is a cryptological intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense. Founded in 1952, the NSA collects and analyzes foreign communications and signals intelligence, and protects U.S. government communications and information systems. This involves information security and cryptanalysis/cryptography. Harry S. Truman authorized the formation of the NSA after the AFSA, which was charged with directing the communications and electronic surveillance activities of the US military intelligence services, had proven ineffective, resulting in the 1952 Brownell Committee Report, which recommended the formation of an agency with greater coordination and direction of intelligence gathering on the national level. The NSA is headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland, with a scale of operations that is difficult to determine from unclassified data.(1)(2)
