Trusted Information Systems

Trusted Information Systems (TIS) was a computer security research and development company founded by NSA's Steve Walker in 1983. TIS conducted computer and information security research for organizations such as NSA, DARPA, SPAWAR (Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command) and others. TIS worked on numerous security-related projects, including Trusted Xenix, the first commercially available TCSEC class B2 operating system, incorporating the Bell-La Padula model of multilevel security.(1)(2) Another TIS security project was the fwtk Firewall Toolkit, which evolved into one of the first commercial firewalls available, Gauntlet Firewall. Notable former TIS employees include David Bell, Marvin Schaefer, Steve Lipner, and Terry Benzel

After going public in 1996, TIS was purchased by Network Associates in 1998, and has subsequently undergone reorganization efforts as part of numerous security research entities.(3)
